History

Harper-Archer Elementary has deep roots in Atlanta’s west side, serving as a symbol of a long legacy of education, community, and renewal. The school’s site and name commemorate two distinguished leaders in Black education: Charles L. Harper and Samuel H. Archer.

Originally, the location housed Harper High School, built in 1962-1963 to serve the burgeoning population of west Atlanta. Over time, as part of Atlanta Public Schools’ efforts to raise academic performance and optimize resources, two schools (Towns Elementary and Fain Elementary) were merged, and the building was converted into the current Harper-Archer Elementary School, which opened under this new configuration in August 2019

The current school emphasizes literacy, STEAM, and a commitment to serve the students of its neighborhood with a strong foundation that honors its historical namesakes while looking forward.
